Getting Here, Best Time to Visit, Festivals and Attractions

Ladakh is located in Leh district near Indus Valley which is around 11500 ft (3500 meters) above the sea level. This remote area is an exotic destination for travel to Himalayas. In the year 1974, Ladakh was opened for tourism. Leh is very common and exotic entryway to Ladakh. Enveloped by alpine desert and bounded by two largest mountains in the world, Leh is overwhelmed by several Buddhist monasteries. Its barren dry lands make this area an amazing location to visit.  

Getting Around Leh
You can fly to Leh directly from Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. For tours to Ladakh, buses are also available for a couple of months in a year because snow is melted in summers.  Manali Leh highway remains open from June to October for Himachal tour. From Srinagar to Leh, the highway is also opened from June to November. You can get here in Leh by taxi, bus and jeep. Due to complex terrain, you may have to spend 2 to 3 days in road trip. But magnificent scenery makes it enjoyable. You should reach Leh by road if your health condition is sound.

Best Time to Go Leh
Summer months from May to September are said to be best time to go Leh. Unlike other reasons in India, Ladakh doesn’t witnesses much rain. So, it is best if you visit Leh during monsoons.

Tourist Attractions in Leh
The prehistoric monuments and Buddhist monasteries of Leh are biggest tourist attractions for holidays in Himalayas. Shanti Stupa is one of the most attractive attractions situated in the outskirts of Ladakh. Kali Mandir, which is about 800 years old, is located at the center of town and has amazing assortment of masks. Here you can spin a large prayer wheel. The Leh Palace, constructed in 17th Century in typical Tibetan form, provides spectacular view of Ladakh. Thiksey Monastery in the south of town is best destination to explore picturesque sunsets.

Adventure Things to Do
For adventure tours in India, Ladakh is an excellent option and adventure and nature lovers’ paradise. Here you can enjoy paragliding and hiking. It has a lot of trails for trekking, like Temisgam, Likir and Spituk’s Markha valley. Some high mountain peaks like Goleb, Stok, Matho West, Kangyatse etc. are best places for mountain climbing in Zanskar Mountains. From July to August, you can enjoy water rafting in Shayok River, Indus River and Zanskar River. You can also enjoy camel safari in Nubra Valley.

Important Festivals in Leh
In the beginning of September, Ladakh festival is celebrated with alluring procession along the streets. Here in this festival, villagers sing folk songs, wear traditional dresses for dancing in orchestra. Here you can also catch dance performances and music concerts presented by lamas masked from mock marriage ceremonies and monasteries. From June to July, Hemis Festival is celebrated for two days at Hemis Gompa for honoring the Guru Padmasambhaya’s birthday, who was the founder of Tibet’s Tantric Buddhism. Here you can explore vivid masked dance performances and traditional music as well as the fair of stunning handcrafts.

Some Tips for Leh Tour
Make sure to have a lot of time to become accustomed to the environment of Leh because you may suffer from altitude sickness. Drink sufficient amount of water and don’t do anything different in the first few days. Laptops are not fit for high altitude as their hard drives are supposed to crash.
